CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Tears glisten in my mother’s eyes. “You can’t fight the dragon brothers alone.”

I look to Isaac. “I won’t be alone.”

Before Mom can point out that two angels hardly makes an army, Micah clears his throat.

“Okay, then we have a place to start,” he says. “We’ll protect the book while Asper hunts the hunters.”

I nod just as I pick up the sound of footfalls outside the room. A moment later, the older dragon shifter, Leon, looms in the doorway. His wavy, brown hair is speckled with gray, his skin is light brown, and his voice always reminds me of a rusty engine. His scent is filled with spices and the dryness of a desert.

He has a calm presence, but I’m not fooled. He’s as dangerous as every other Grudge dragon.

He quickly takes in the room before he addresses Micah. “You need to get out there. The clan’s… unsettled.”

The way he says ‘unsettled’ sounds like an understatement.

Micah spins back to us. “Melisma, my clan is accustomed to your presence here. They trust you, but the same can’t be said for Asper or Isaac.” His next direction is for me. “Don’t stray from this room without permission or they’ll take it as an act of aggression.” He follows that up with a glare at Isaac. “And you, no more wandering around.”

Isaac shrugs, his expression unreadable. “I needed chairs.”

I can’t help but smile at the way that Micah seems to have taken to the role of alpha, even though he once expressed doubts about his clan’s willingness to follow him. They may be unsettled right now but I have no doubt Micah will pull them into line.

He’s already at the door before I call out to him. “Micah?”

“What?”

“Your clan needs you to lead them, so fucking lead them.”

His scowl clears and a smile grows on his face that reminds me of a wolf before it takes the first bite of its prey. “You sound just like Dad.”

Micah’s gone before I can murmur. “Yeah, well, he was my brother.”

I listen to Micah’s and Leon’s footfalls, counting their steps to judge the distance along the corridor outside my room before a door closes and then all sound stops.

“So I am a prisoner,” I say, noting the way Isaac is already closely watching the door.

“Rest,” my mother says to me, a firm command before her expression softens. “I know this doesn’t feel like a welcoming place, but I’m glad you’re here. I’m grateful that we could finally talk.”

She clears her throat, wiping at her eyes as she rises off the bed. “I’ll bring you a fresh change of clothes and more food soon. In the meantime, I need to help Micah. The Grudge don’t do things democratically. Ever since Edmund died, they’ve lived harsh lives and rely on violence too often to solve their issues.”

At that, Isaac drags his chair across the room to position it between the door and my bed, taking his seat like he’s guarding me.

“Okay, then,” I murmur.

Mom presses my shoulder in
